STORY: Swedish trade Group working on Sexism Ratings for games
INFO : The Sweden-based trade group, Dataspelsbranchen, has begun research on a new sexism rating system for games. The idea was based off of the Bachdel Test, which is a test designed to determine if forms of media, mainly movies, are sexist. The group was given a $37,000 grant from the Swedish government to continue in their research. Anton Albiin, project manager of the research, said “Of course games can be about fantasy but they can be so much more than this. They can also be a form of cultural expression – reflecting society or the society we are hoping for. Games can help us to create more diverse workplaces and can even change the way we think about things.”
STORY: Blizzard gives Free Time for WoW players
INFO : In response to the long queue and downtimes caused to WoW servers when Warlords of Draenor launched, World of Warcraft Executive Producer J. Allen Brack came out last Tuesday and said “In recognition of the difficulties so many of you ran into when trying to play over the first few days, we’re adding five days’ worth of extra time to every subscription in the Americas, Oceania, and Europe that was active as of Friday, November 14. Things are already in a much better place than they were going into the weekend, so I hope you’ll now be able to focus on having a ton of fun with this expansion.”
STORY : GameStop Closed For Thanksgiving?
INFO : In a surprising announcement, CEO Paul Raines said that GameStop will not be opening a day early for notoriously brutal shopping day known as Black Friday in the US. He said went on to say,”Sometimes, we have to not let the pressure from other retailers distract us from our values.”. Some locations will have midnight openings, while everywhere else will be open at the usual 8AM local time. Obviously this is only in regards to the US locations, everywhere else it will be business as usual.
STORY: New Steam early Access Policy
INFO : Giant Bombs Patrick Klepek reported today that several developers have confirmed the existence of new guidelines and rules for Steams Early Access Program. One of these rules is that if they are to distribute or sell steam keys through any other source, for instance a Humble Bundle, these games must be labeled as Early Access titles through the other distributors. Developers are also discouraged on “making specific promises about future events”. Another rule is that the price on Steam MUST match the price of anywhere else they are selling the game. The other guidelines ask developers not to launch games into Early Access if: you only have a tech demo, if the game is nearly complete, and if you can’t finish the game with few or no sales. Though these last few seem to be so a developer doesn’t screw himself over rather than in the interests of consumers.
Dear Quality Show,
Do you think the notion of “heroic” assassins will die with Assassins Creed unity?
Company: Empire Gate
Game: Blackwake (Release Update)
**News:** Blackwake is a multiplayer team game with combat centered around old time Naval battles. The company announced the game last Friday, along with a YouTube trailer and its kickstarter campaign. The group has said they have been working on this project part time since 2013, and just now have decided they wanted to commit to it full time. The alpha footage show seems promising, and it is very reminiscent of games like Chivalry and Mount & Blade.
The features they are promising include, Team oriented sailing, melee and ranged combat, PvE monster combat, realistic and fictional modes, random weather, large multiplayer battles, ship destruction, and one of their more ambitious goals it to achieve simultaneous land and sea combat. Things like, assaulting a fort by sea, or having multiple ships fighting over an island with treasure, but Empire Gate have said that is something to be done farther into development.
Company: Ebb Software
Game: Scorn Episode One (Announcement)
**News:** Ebb Software recently started a kickstarter for their original looking game, Scorn. The game is to be an atmospheric first person horror adventure game, where you are thrown into an unfamiliar environment, no direction where to go, and as an unfleshed out (no pun intended) character.
The goal of the game is to give players an experience of a horror situation if you were just thrown in. You are supposed to be the character, make decisions, take your own meaning from them, and make your own story about what is happening in this alien place.
The world you are in has no path to follow, or set order of tasks to do. Your character will be able to pick things up fluidly, so there will be no floating items to break the immersion. Ebb Software has also said they are putting a focus on limited inventory space, no hud, full body view, anything to give you the experience that you ARE the character.
Each section of the world has themes to it and you are meant to be solving puzzles to progress and gain helpful skills along the way.
It is admitted the game was designed for Virtual reality, though it is noted that the game will be playable without it. They have also said want to be able to add support to devices like sixense’s STEM system, a device that was designed to allow you to control game character with your physical movements.
Game: Crossing Souls (Announced)
**News:** Crossing Souls is an RPG like adventure game that is centered around a group of friends in California. They find a mysterious stone which they discover, after some messing around, has the ability to let you walk in and see the ghosts of the dead. Using the stone seems to have some consequences, as ghosts start to bleed into reality and have more of a prominent effect on the living.
The plot is further described on their kickstarter but it is a little spoilery. In the game you are able to control the 5 different friends as they venture around THE California, befriending ghosts from different times, stopping those who are causing havoc, and fight a dragon.
Each of the kids have a different abilities and weapons. The strong kid can push big things and punches enemies, the brainy kid can hack things and use a laser gun, and the athletic girl is accurate with a baseball and uses a jump rope for attack.
The Kickstarter has 27 days to go and is $38,000 away from its goal.
Company: Arkavia Studios
Game: Lords of the Black Sun (Patch Update)
**News:** Lords of the Black Sun is a space turn based strategy game where you play a warlord and bring your empire to supremacy in the galaxy. The game has been out for 2 months and has been received very negatively by consumers. Most of the complaints stem from “it is WAY too hard” or “it just gets bland after a while”. Arkavia Studios has been trying to fight back the disappointment by releasing a huge update for the game.
They have given you 4 planets to start off with instead of one, which might help with the tendency for other factions to zerg rush you early in the game. The AI of the factions have also been adjusted so they are smarter when taking deals, but will use diplomacy a lot more often. The entire tech tree has been rebalanced and they added some new weapons for the ship battle portion of the game. Finally they have fixed a number of bugs and glitches that stop players from being able to establish trade routes between their planets.
Company: Project Whitecard Studios
Game: Starlite Astronaut Academy (Announced)
**News:** Closed Alpha has been announced for Project Whitecard Studios game, Starlite Astronaut Academy. The game is being developed in conjunction with NASA to give an “educational”, fun, and “realistic” experience for players. While a great idea in concept, Project Whitecard Studios had previously developed G-Ball and Starlite Astronaut Rescue using the same engine, and both projects were complete flops. Starlite Astronaut Rescue was also developed in conjunction with NASA, and the end product was buggy, unintuitive, unfun experience with the “educational” label being slapped on because they had a few math problems in the game. G-Ball was the companies first game, and it was designed to be “a mash-up of basketball, football, and dodgeball as you soar through a zero gravity arena in 3 on 3 team matches.” Which in concept itself seems ridiculous since the 3 sports listened have entirely different rules about how you even touch the ball itself.
You can find actual footage of the game from their “in-house alpha tester” on her channel, starDawner on YouTube. With their previous games in mind, and the footage from starDawner, it doesn’t seem to be a whole lot better than their previous titles.
It should also be noted that the game has received assistance from The Canada Media Fund and the University of California Irvine, who in turn brought the Bill and Melinda Gates and MacArthur Foundations to back the effort in making the scientific achievements meaningful while playing.
Game: Guild Wars 2 (Patch Update)
News : Arenanet announced yesterday a big update to the Guild Wars 2 PvP system December 2nd. This update will completely change the matchmaking system in the game, so that instead of just a player’s rating, the algorithm will take into account group size, class composition, and an improved dishonor system. Dishonor is a score given to players who drop from games consistently, similar systems have been used primarily in MOBAs.
There will also be 3 different PvP arenas, Practice, Unranked, and Competitive. These updates are very important since Guild Wars 2 endgame content revolves around guild and player PvP combat.
Following this announcement, John Corpening, Associate Game Director of Guild Wars 2, said “This year we worked with our community to bring you the ‘Tournament of Legends’ as a path to Legendary weapons, the ‘Tournament of Glory’ to earn unique skins through skill based play in PvP, the ESL GO4 tournaments where players can earn weekly cash prizes and an even bigger monthly cash prizes and the World Tournament Series, where the very best players of each region can become legends on the international stage”
This first step into the eSports scene will begin on December 5th, with a cash prize tournament of $150,000, and continue to 2 other events in the year of 2015. All 3 World Tournament Series events will be streamed on Twitch.tv on the Guildwars2 channel.

Company: Edge Case Games
Game: Fractured Space (Early Access Release)
News: Fracture Space for Edge Case Games is a 5v5 capital ship shooter which came out onto steam early access today, thursday the 20th. The premise of the game is to control your own capital ship into combat against another team. Each ship is different and there is promises of being able to customize your ship. As of right now early access reviews of the game are mixed, but most of the complaints come from the fact the game crashes quite a bit, and not because of actual gameplay.
Edge Case Games have said they plan to release the full title in 2015, which might prove to be a problem since a game of a similar type, a more publicized game called Dreadnought, will be coming out at the same time, and that game is planned to be free to play.
